The number of Hepatitis B\u00a0cases\u00a0reported\u00a0is on\u00a0therise\u00a0among youngsters, particularly, in the age group of 15 and 20 years. Regular screening has been\u00a0made\u00a0mandatory and in view of this, the clinic aims at providing an all-inclusive evaluation and treatment facilities along with creating awareness around lifestyle modification in order to keep liver diseases at bay. Besides this, the centre is\u00a0equipped with\u00a0a\u00a0specialized ultrasound machine called Fibroscan, which\u00a0measures fibrosis (scarring) and steatosis (fatty change) in the liver.<\/p>\n

Dr Joy Varghese \u2013 Director, Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology, Gleneagles Global Health City said<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cNon–<\/strong>Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease(NAFLD)<\/strong>\u00a0is a condition where\u00a0the excess\u00a0fat\u00a0gets accumulated\u00a0in the liver of\u00a0people\u00a0who\u00a0drink less or no\u00a0alcohol. When more than 5% – 10% percent of the liver’s weight is made up of fat, it is called a fatty liver\u00a0(Steatosis)<\/strong>.\u00a0NAFLD begins with a simple fatty liver and slowly progresses to\u00a0advanced liver failure or liver cancer over one or two decades\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cCurrently, 9 to 35% Indians are suffering from fatty liver and the problem is increasing with time,\u00a0mainly due to change in lifestyle and dietary pattern.\u00a0Fatty liver disease is completely reversible without medication by\u00a0lifestyle\u00a0modification and is preventable to a great extent by avoiding junk \/ fast foods, regular exercise (walking for 45 minutes per day for at least 5 days in a week) and by cutting the intake of carbohydrate\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Dr Joy Varghese<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recent clinical studies on fatty liver have shown that there is significant reduction in survival in NASH patients as compared to non-NASH group. Suffering due to fatty liver related end-stage liver disease is also a major concern. Risk of liver cancer due to NAFLD is also in rising trend.
