GEM Hospital Celebrates 100 successful bariatric surgeries under the Chief Minister\u2019s Health Insurance scheme
\nChennai, August 2019: GEM Hospital, India\u2019s premier Gastroenterology, laparoscopic and Robotic surgery hospital, organized the \u201cBeneficiary meeting\u201d of patients who underwent bariatric surgery under the Tamil Nadu Comprehensive Chief Ministers Health Insurance Scheme. Over 100 such surgeries have been performed already under the scheme. Thiru Dr C. Vijayabaskar, Honourable Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Dr. Beela Rajesh, Health Secretary, Govt of Tamilnadu graced the occasion with their presence.
\nSpeaking on the Occasion Thiru Dr C. Vijayabaskar, Honourable Minister for Health & Family Welfare said that, \u201cTamil Nadu is the only state to recognize Bariatric Surgery under the Chief Minister\u2019s Insurance Scheme benefitting those suffering from Obesity\u201d.
\nDr. Praveen Raj, Head – Department of Bariatric Surgery, GEM Hospital mentioned that, \u201cBariatric surgery refers to laparoscopic procedure performed with the intent of treatment of morbid obesity, type 2 diabetes and related co-morbidities.<\/p>\n

It is a part of the special procedures under TNHSP (Tamilnadu Health Systems Project), which is the first of its kind in India. Many states are in the process of following our model on the same. With lifestyle diseases emerging to be the major killer of today\u2019s century, bariatric surgery has evolved to be a boon for many, suffering from these diseases that\u2019s refractory to lifestyle modifications and medical management alone\u201d.
\nHe also added that, \u201cWorld Health Organisation (WHO) has recognised Obesity as a disease. Hypertension, infertility, sleep apnea, cardiac illness and eventual increase in morbidity and mortality, Chances of type 2 diabetes are some of the ill effects of Obesity. Any treatment relating to this disease is a life saving procedure. We have already completed Over 100 such procedures in our hospital successfully with tremendous improvements in the quality and quantity of life of these patients. We celebrate this moment and thank all the stakeholders involved with the success of the program\u201d.<\/p>\n
