The Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu to Inaugurate Sangam 2021 Convention of IIT Madras Alumni Association<\/p>\n

\u2022 Spread over 4 months, the 4th edition of Sangam will have the theme of \u2018Restoring Balance in STEM\u2019 and the crucial role of \u2018Women in STEM\u2019 and will be conducted in a hybrid mode<\/p>\n

\u2022 With the acceleration in technology and innovation, conversations around Balancing Globalization & Local Economy, Growth & Sustainability and Convenience & Privacy are important to of \u2018Restoring Balance in STEM\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2022 Sessions present thought leadership and are set to attract the participation of alumni of IITs and the general public<\/p>\n

\u2022 Special interactive programs and contests are planned to create awareness in these topics amongst 15,000+ students<\/p>\n

Chennai, 16 Dec. 2021<\/p>\n

The Hon\u2019ble Governor of Tamil Nadu, Thiru R.N. Ravi, is scheduled to inaugurate Sangam 2021, the flagship annual convention of the IIT Madras Alumni Association (IITMAA), on December 18, 2021. The 4th edition of Sangam will host fireside conversations and panel discussions, spread over four months till March 2022, under the theme of \u2018Restoring Balance in STEM\u2019. The event will highlight the importance of improved participation of women in STEM in achieving this balance. Sangam 2021 will be held largely online and will also comprise a few hybrid programs.<\/p>\n

About 15,000 participants, including alumni and students of IIT Madras and general public, are expected to take part in Sangam 2021, one of the largest alumni gatherings of an institute on a single platform.<\/p>\n

The virtual sessions will feature conversations and stories from leading professionals, researchers in STEM and start-ups.<\/p>\n

\u2022 A panel discussion on \u2018Strategy for Indian Pharma to Propel the Global Market\u2019 will be organised, following the inauguration.<\/p>\n

\u2022 In January 2022, two sessions on \u2018Restoring Balance in STEM Research\u2019 and \u2018Machine Behaviour or Human Intelligence\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2022 In February 2022, there will be two sessions on \u201cSpace the final frontier\u201d, and \u201cIndia Becoming a Champion and Leader in Sustainability\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2022 In March 2022, a session on \u201cCatching them young! Inspiring girls to take on STEM courses\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2022 IITMAA Sangam 2021 is also conducting an online quiz and crossword contests themed on \u2018Women in STEM\u2019 for both school children and adults.<\/p>\n

Among the eminent speakers who would address the sessions are:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, Co-founder, Infosys<\/p>\n

\u2022 Dr. Gagandeep Kang, Professor at CMC Vellore<\/p>\n

\u2022 Dr. Mridula Nair who is in the Forbes Global 50 Over 50 for her innovations in STEM<\/p>\n

\u2022 Ms. Almitra Patel, India’s first woman engineer from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and environmental champion<\/p>\n

\u2022 Other eminent speakers include Mr. Sameer Mehta, Vice Chairman, Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, and Association of Healthcare Providers of India – Tamil Nadu, Dr. Radha Rangarajan, CTO, Health Cube, Ms. Namrata Vora, Director and Mentor, Aarti Homes and winner of London City Award, Ms Shalini Puchalapali, Country Head, Google – Customer Solutions, Dr. Bhuvaneswari Sridhar, Head, API Technology Group, Pfizer, and Ms. Srividya Ramakrishnan, Senior Director, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories.<\/p>\n

In relation to the theme of Sangam 2021, IITMAA is also launching several initiatives including a forum for women leadership and entrepreneurship, and a mentoring and wellbeing program for women. The forum on women in research and academia has already been kick started by Prof Preeti and Prof Shanti of IITM.<\/p>\n

The key alumni in the Sangam 2021 Coordination team include Ms Shyamala Rajaram, Chair Sangam 2021, Dr Malati Raghunath, Ms Raji Baskaran, Dr.Preeti Aghalayam, Dr. Shanti Bhattacharya, and Nishani Manohar, ED, IITMAA.<\/p>\n

In her comments on Sangam 2021, Ms. Shyamala Rajaram, Chair of Sangam 2021, said, \u201cWe see this question of balance in STEM come up repeatedly in society while discussing topics like balancing globalization and local economy, balancing convenience and privacy, and balancing growth and sustainability. Our position is that ensuring improved access and participation of women in STEM is one powerful solution to restoring this balance.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his comments on Sangam 2021, Mr. Krishnan Narayanan, President, IITMAA, said, \u201cUnder the Societal Impact pillar of IITMAA, we have articulated the \u201cMission Million Smiles\u201d, which is to positively impact at least a million people in India over the next two years. Women in STEM is an important initiative under this pillar. I am glad we are deliberating this important topic in Sangam 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n
