Chennai, 26th<\/sup> August 2015 \u2013<\/b> M.V. Hospital for Diabetes and Prof. M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre, Royapuram<\/b> celebrated its Founder\u2019s Day <\/b>marking the 92nd<\/sup> birth anniversary of its founder Prof. M. Viswanathan<\/b>, today. Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, I.A.S.<\/del>., Secretary, Health & Family welfare department, Government of Tamil Nadu was the Chief Guest and.<\/del> Dr. V. Shanta, Chairperson, Adyar Cancer Institute was the Guest of Honour on the occasion.<\/p>\n

Dr P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman Emeritus, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai was recognised with Prof. Viswanathan Selfless Service Award and Dr. N. Paul Sunder Singh, Founder Director, Karunalaya, Chennai was recognised with Prof. M. Viswanathan Outstanding Social Service Award.<\/p>\n

A Booklet on Prevention of Cancer, Blindness & Diabetes<\/b> was released during the occasion.\u00a0 It was jointly published by Adyar Cancer Institute, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai and M.V. Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram.<\/p>\n

Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, Head & Chief Diabetologist, M.V. Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram<\/b> said, \u2018today Diabetes place a major role in causing cancer and blindness.\u00a0 Diabetes is associated with many cancers like breast, liver and pancreatic cancers. Diabetes is also a major cause for blindness due to Diabetic retinopathy.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, I.A.S.<\/del>., Secretary, Health & Family welfare department, Government of Tamil Nadu<\/b> reminisced on role of M.V. Hospital for Diabetes and Prof. M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre, Royapuram in creating awareness on diabetes and its prevention.<\/p>\n

Highlighting on care for Diabetes, he said, \u201cCurrently, the prevalence of diabetes in Tamil Nadu is predicted to be 55,000 cases per year and there is a lack of awareness and medical attention to diabetes related complications. Even though, diabetes can be inherited most patients of diabetes acquire it due to behavioural and lifestyle factors. Lifestyle intervention is the best and most cost effective strategy to prevent diabetes\u201d.<\/p>\n

Dr. V.Shanta, Chairperson, Adyar Cancer Institute said<\/b>, \u201cAccording to Indian Diabetes Foundation 2014, an estimated 35.4 million diabetic patients remain undiagnosed thus giving diabetes the status of a potential epidemic in India. As far as the non-communicable diseases – Cancer, Diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases were concerned the thrust area should be prevention. Care, Cure and Control should be the motto to tackle these health problems\u201d.<\/p>\n
