This \u2018Dark\u2019. The film begins with Deputy Commissioner of Police Balachandar (Natty Nataraj), attending as a special guest at a guidance session for students preparing for the Group-1 exam in Chennai. In response to a student\u2019s question, \u201cHave you ever been afraid in your police career?\u201d, he starts recounting a terrifying incident that shook his life.<\/p>\n

In a house owned by former government official Karunakaran (K. Bhagyaraj), one of three young men who were living there as tenants brutally kills the other two and then takes his own life. The mysterious deaths leave everyone terrified of entering that house. But Vignesh (Ajay Karthi), an atheist graphic designer with no fears, boldly moves into the house for the sole reason that the rent is extremely low.<\/p>\n

Initially confident, Vignesh starts experiencing terrifying nightmares at night and unexpected accidents. As days go by, it begins to feel as if there\u2019s something strange and supernatural lurking in the house. Priya Darshini (Anjana Nethran), the house owner’s daughter, subtly shares some shocking truths with Vignesh \u2014 that the previous tenants may not have actually left the house yet.<\/p>\n

On the day this confusion reaches a peak, the house owner, Bhagyaraj, is found dead under mysterious circumstances inside the house, with Vignesh lying nearby, covered in brutal injuries. When police officer Natti arrives there to investigate and examines the bodies, Vignesh who was presumed dead \u2014 suddenly gets up, warns Natti sternly by calling out his name, and then faints again, pushing the film to a peak of suspense. How did a stranger know his name, what is the dark past behind that house, and did Vignesh escape from the supernatural fear? \u2014 that forms the rest of the story.<\/p>\n

Ajay Karthi, who plays the lead role of a graphic designer in this psychological horror film, has beautifully portrayed the traits of a vibrant, modern young man. He brilliantly brings out the mindset of an ordinary person \u2014 who starts off as an atheist showing courage, but gradually gets trapped and tormented by fear due to the supernatural events unfolding in that mysterious house.<\/p>\n

Anjana Nethran, who plays the house owner’s daughter, has portrayed the mysterious expressions required for the story beautifully. Among senior actors like Bhagyaraj and Natty, she has performed her given role with finesse. Veteran artiste the late K. Bhagyaraj has left his signature mark as a realistic house owner who conceals the house’s past.<\/p>\n

Natty Nataraj, who plays the Deputy Commissioner of Police, brings a distinct momentum to the overall screenplay with his polished performance. Starting from the discussion with Group-1 students to investigating the background of the mysterious house, he has been outstanding and intimidating in his usual style as an honest officer. He has precisely expressed the investigative gaze required for a psychological thriller storyline through his body language. Sibi Chakravarthy and Indumathi Manikandan have appeared at the necessary points in the story\u2019s flow and contributed their part.<\/p>\n

Cinematographer Ravi Sakthi has visually captured the dark, supernatural atmosphere of the mysterious house and the fear of the characters with great finesse and precision through his camera angles, living up to the film\u2019s title. Using lighting and framing, he puts the audience on edge and creates an unknowing sense of chilling suspense in every supernatural scene.<\/p>\n

For horror films, the background score is the lifeblood. Composer Manu Ramesan has turned it into an authentic horror experience that grips the audience through his background music. Without even showing ghostly figures on screen, he has brilliantly evoked fear in the theatre using just the music alone. Especially in the supernatural sequences that Vignesh faces, the sharp sound effects keep us perched on the edge of our seats and powerfully convey the intensity of the storyline.<\/p>\n

Editor Kathiresh Alagesan has kept the story moving in a straight line by cutting out unnecessary scenes, and has seamlessly tied the supernatural events to the investigation sequences without any lag, maintaining the pace. Art director Shanmugaraja has designed the layout of that mysterious house with great finesse and realism. Every room in the house, and its aged look, merges with the story and gives off a distinct supernatural vibe.<\/p>\n

Director Kalyan K. Jegan has steered clear of the usual ghost-film template in Tamil cinema. Using only the fear of the human mind as his core, he has crafted a screenplay that keeps you on the edge of your seat every second without showing any ghosts or spirits on screen. He holds the suspense till the end, unfolds it as a psychological thriller, untangles the mystery knots, and directs the film without any slump, showcasing his talent brilliantly.<\/p>\n

There is a minor weakness in some places where the supernatural scenes feel repetitive, but the moment Ajay Karthi enters that mysterious house, the film puts us on edge. After a long time, this \u2018Dark\u2019 gives Tamil audiences a quality thriller experience and sends a chill through the theatre.<\/p>\n

“Dark” movie is an earnest effort to deliver a pure psychological horror thriller. The screenplay could have been tighter to make it more gripping, but the film still works thanks to its tight narrative, immersive atmosphere, and compelling mystery. As a result, it\u2019s a solid pick for viewers who want a grounded, supernatural thriller that leans into suspense rather than spectacle.<\/p>\n
