Chennai,\u00a0August 21 2017:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Apollo Hospitals, Asia\u2019s largest and most trusted multi-specialty chain of hospitals today\u00a0launched\u00a0an\u00a0organ donation awareness drive honouring the organ donors ‘ families at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road. \u201cTree of Life\u201d,\u00a0a banyan tree replica was installed at the Apollo Main\u00a0hospital with lamps\u00a0embossed with the donor names as\u00a0a tribute\u00a0to\u00a0their\u00a0contribution of gifting a life or lives.\u00a0<\/span>As a part of the\u00a030-day awareness campaign,\u00a0Apollo Hospitals Group is also running a digital pledge to spread the awareness and to motivate people to pledge to donate their organs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr\u00a0Prathap\u00a0C. Reddy, Executive-Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group\u00a0and Ms. Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group\u00a0participated in\u00a0the event and felicitated the donor families.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

A single donor can save up to\u00a0nine\u00a0lives and can help as many as 50 people.\u00a0Every year,\u00a0almost 5\u00a0lakh people lose their lives in India due to non-availability of\u00a0organs. Over\u00a050,000 people await\u00a0for\u00a0a kidney transplant,\u00a0but only 5000 get one.\u00a0The situation of shortage is almost similar for the\u00a0vital organs such as heart, liver, lungs,\u00a0and pancreas. Apollo Hospitals reiterated\u00a0its commitment to organ donation and transplant through this special event that celebrates the spirit of life and the generous act of organ donation.Donor families were acknowledged with mementos for the\u00a0efforts taken by them to gift lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Emphasizing on the need for awareness on organ donation in India<\/i><\/span>\u00a0Dr. Prathap C. Reddy,Executive Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group<\/i><\/b><\/span>,\u00a0said \u201cMillions of people worldwide suffer due to organ failure, whose lives can only be saved by timely replacement of failed organs.\u00a0One donor could make a difference in almost 50 people\u2019s lives.\u00a0Though\u00a0the\u00a0organ\u00a0donation rate is proliferating globally, it is not\u00a0quite\u00a0significant in India due to lack of awareness. With a\u00a0population\u00a0of over 120 crore, India\u2019s organ donation rate is one of the lowest with 0.3\u00a0donations per\u00a0million whereas\u00a0Spain is 36 per\u00a0million and USA is 26\u00a0per\u00a0million.\u00a0We see that\u00a0India is lagging behind in organ donation,whereas\u00a0on the other hand,\u00a0we\u00a0are seeing a huge\u00a0rise in\u00a0chronic diseases\u00a0that affect our people. Importance of awareness on organ donation will enable\u00a0us to save more and more lives…\u00a0By donating an organ, a second lease of life is given to the person which equals a rebirth. We, as a group\u00a0want to encourage\u00a0more people to come forward in taking part in this generous move.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking on the occasion\u00a0<\/span>Ms. Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group,\u00a0said<\/b><\/span>,\u00a0\u201cHeart<\/span>\u00a0and lung diseases are seen on the rise in children and young adults,\u00a0it is devastating both in terms of early death and crippling disability at a very young age. The only solution\u00a0to this is\u00a0an\u00a0organ transplantation.\u00a0It is important to spread donor awareness so that the pool of donors increases\u00a0and more people with heart and lung diseases\u00a0can benefit.\u00a0Today, i<\/span>t is heartwarming to see the families\u00a0that volunteered\u00a0to donate organs,\u00a0thereby gifting a life to others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Tree of\u00a0Life\u2019 –\u00a011 feet\u00a0banyan\u00a0tree was set\u00a0up\u00a0at Apollo Hospital, Greams\u00a0Road\u00a0to\u00a0remember the donors\u00a0for their life saving gift.\u00a0Lanterns\u00a0carrying donor names were hung on the tree\u00a0to\u00a0honour their\u00a0gift of life.\u00a0Around\u00a025\u00a0donor families were present on the occasion and were felicitated by the dignitaries.\u00a0As a part of the\u00a030-day awareness\u00a0campaign Apollo Hospitals Group is also running a digital pledge to spread the awareness and to motivate people to pledge to donate their organs.
