Bangalore,\u00a0January 23, 2018:<\/strong>\u00a0Doctors at\u00a0Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road<\/strong>\u00a0successfully performed a rare bilateral knee replacement surgery on a 47-years-old man suffering from Hemophilia here recently. The resident from Bangalore was suffering from severe pain in both his knees impairing his ability to perform daily work. His severe condition of Hemophilia, a genetic disorder that leads to profuse and unstoppable bleeding along with poor blood clotting following any injury, made this bilateral knee replacement a unique feat of clinical excellence. The team of doctors were led by\u00a0Dr Narayan Hulse, Additional Director, Orthopaedics<\/strong>\u00a0along with\u00a0Dr Sachin Suresh Jadhav, Consultant, Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant at Fortis Hospitals, Bannerghatta Road in Bangalore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the patient was admitted with complaints of severe pain, difficulty in bending knees affecting his walking capability and perform daily chores. After evaluating and trying various medications, bilateral knee replacement was the only treatment to cure him of this lingering pain in his knees. However, the hemophilia condition made this a rare and challenging case.<\/p>\n

Hemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly risking the life of a hemophilia patient following injuries or surgery. Due to this condition, the patient was prone to \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 multiple joint bleeds or hemarthrosis since birth. These may be caused by minimal trauma and affects primarily joints like knees, ankles and elbows. With recurrent hemarthrosis of knees, it caused joint degeneration or hemophiliac arthropathy. With the help of some excellent treatment plan of recovery by the doctors, the condition of hemophilia was impeccably managed and the knee replacement was done without any complications. The clinical excellence of the case was proved when the patient recovered completely.<\/p>\n

Dr\u00a0Narayan Hulse, Senior\u00a0Orthopaedic\u00a0surgeon and Additional Director of\u00a0Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore<\/strong>\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cThe patient\u00a0had severe\u00a0hemophilia\u00a0destruction of the\u00a0knee\u00a0joints\u00a0which had affected his basic activities of daily living.\u00a0Therefore, there was an urgent need for knee replacement surgery. Generally, the knee replacement surgery is performed on people above the age of 60 but in this\u00a0case due\u00a0to repetitive bleeding in the joint, his joints were damaged at an early age\u00a0with severe disabilities.\u00a0Only sensible way to help\u00a0him\u00a0was to conduct a knee replacement. However, performing surgery was a complicated task in\u00a0him, because of\u00a0the\u00a0potentially\u00a0fatal bleeding risk. He had severe deformity (bending) of his knees, which required more surgical time, more bleeding and surgical difficulties.\u00a0To\u00a0normalise\u00a0the blood clotting factors\u00a0in\u00a0his\u00a0body, we performed\u00a0a\u00a0clotting factor replacement therapy (infusing artificial blood\u00a0factor into\u00a0the veins) before the surgery. This brought in confidence between us and the patient to proceed with the treatment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Dr\u00a0Sachin\u00a0Suresh Jadhav, Consultant in Hematologist, Bone Marrow Transplant, Fortis Hospitals, Bannerghatta road said,\u00a0\u201c<\/em><\/strong>Patient\u2019s knee replacement surgery was a challenging task but the team of hematologists, lab, surgeons and the physiotherapists worked together to make it possible. We were extra careful regarding the internal bleeding in this case considering the condition of the patient. The blood factor injections were given to the patient two times a day for about 14 days to avoid any risk of internal bleeding. Simultaneously, we started physiotherapy to mobilize the leg movements which also played a big role in the recovery of the patient.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The patient,\u00a0Mr\u00a0Chikkana\u00a0said,<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cI was suffering from Hemophilia since\u00a0birth.\u00a0However, my condition became severe when I was unable to walk and\u00a0suffered\u00a0severe pain,\u00a0day and night.\u00a0\u00a0My knee\u00a0replacement surgery\u00a0went well. I am thankful to the team of Fortis hospitals who treated me well. I am recovering fast and will be visiting to the doctors for routine\u00a0checkup.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are about 17000 hemophilia patients in India out of which 2500 are in Karnataka. Factor VIII\u00a0medication is used to control and prevent bleeding episodes in people with low levels of factor VIII (hemophilia A). It is also used in these patients before surgery to prevent bleeding.The product contains human factor VIII, also called antihemophilic factor. In this patient’s case, factor VIII injection was funded by the government.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH), India has the second highest number of global patients with hemophilia A where most of the<\/p>\n

patients\u00a0remain\u00a0undiagnosed. This calls for more education and surveillance to the mass for prevention and care of this disease.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
